AC will not turn on: checks before the service call

An AC that will not start does not automatically need replacement. Check the thermostat’s mode and setting, then describe what the indoor and outdoor equipment are doing.

The short answer
  • Confirm the thermostat is set to cool and is asking for cooling.
  • Check batteries only if your thermostat uses them.
  • A blank screen or silent outdoor unit can have several causes.

Start with the thermostat setting

Make sure the thermostat is set to cool and its target is below the current room temperature. If it uses batteries, respond to a low-battery indication according to its instructions. These checks can prevent a service visit for a setting rather than a failed system.

What affects the price when your AC will not start?

Ask which cause the repair quote addresses. A thermostat issue, a blocked filter, an airflow problem, or a failed capacitor can be behind an AC that will not start, and those findings call for different work.

Compare the proposed repair with the diagnosis before budgeting for replacement. Some first-start-of-the-season problems are smaller repairs, so the estimate should identify the fault and the work to get the system cooling again.

      Notice what is running

Report whether the display is blank, the indoor fan is moving air, or the outdoor unit is silent. A startup problem can involve a thermostat, capacitor, contactor, power issue, or condensate safety switch. The symptom does not establish which one failed.

Know where the basic checks end

After the thermostat checks, have electrical components and power problems evaluated by a qualified technician. Do not open the equipment to inspect wiring or replace an electrical part based on the fact that the AC will not start.

We're going to come in the house and we're going to say, "Hey, Mrs. Homeowner. Thank you so much for allowing us to come here. First off and foremost, we're going to look for the thermostat." And I know you're going to tell me, "Tucker, I've already made sure that it's set to cool. I'm not an idiot." However, frankly, I got to be honest, it's not you. I promise it's not you. We've had a lot of phone calls where sometimes we show up and the system's not cooling and it's set to off or maybe it's set to heat. Um Simple things first, pal. So, we want to take care of the simple things first. So, the first thing we're going to do is we are going to make sure that the system is set to cool. Then we're going to make sure, "Hey, are the batteries changed in this thermostat?" Because a weak battery can do a couple of things. One, it can cause your system not to run, but two, it can also cause your thermostat to not read the proper temperature. It can cause it to read between 2 to 4° high or low. Maybe you have a powered thermostat and there is no battery. Well, at that point, we're probably going to have to recommend replacing the thermostat because the calibration is off altogether. So, that could be just the start of the problem. But, that's a cheap fix rather than, you know, scenario one that I suggested, which is, "Oh, hey, here's a new system."

When was the last time you checked your thermostat settings?

If you haven't turned on your air conditioner yet, make sure that you've changed your filters. Make sure the area around your condenser is clean. Make sure that's nice and open so that it can breathe. And if it still doesn't turn on after that, call a local HVAC company. They'll get you on the schedule. Whenever we're turning on air conditioners for the first time, typically it's going to be, thankfully, a lower ticket repair. It's going to be something simple like a thermostat, a blocked up filter, you know, some airflow issues, or maybe like a dead capacitor, which are going to be easy to rectify and get you up and cooling pretty quickly. The system just won't turn on. In the summer, this is often electrical. Capacitor, a contactor, breaker, thermostat, float switch, or some other power issue. Sometimes, the system's protecting itself. Sometimes, one inexpensive part is stopping the whole house from cooling. Here's what you can check. Inspect the thermostat and breaker carefully. Make sure the thermostat's set to cool. Make sure the batteries are good, if it uses batteries. Make sure the breaker's not tripped. If the breaker trips again after resetting it once, stop there. Repeatedly resetting a breaker is not a fix.

shutting off your unit and turning it back on. Now, sometimes you can shut something off and it being simple. A lot of the newer units that are higher efficiency have different things to where if the power goes out and the thermostat comes on or the outdoor unit powers up about the same time, they can run into problems where they throw little inconvenient codes, let's put it that way, and they will have lockouts because of this. And uh we've had lots of indications where we had a place where kind of had some bad electricity that came into the actual neighborhood and it would cause these little brown outs or whatever and it would throw codes with the unit. And the simplest thing you can do is turn the power on off and then turn it back on. You know, you can do it at the breaker or you can do it at the actual indoor unit. And you can unplug the indoor unit and unplug the outdoor unit. Plug your outdoor unit back in and then plug your indoor unit back in. That's very important that you do it in that order because depending on your system, that can matter.

Look at your thermostat. Thermostats can tell you a lot of information you need to know whether there's a problem or not. If it's one that's battery-powered, you're probably not going to see anything except for it calling. Now, if you're having it call for cooling and nothing's coming on, that would be an indication that we could have other issues. If your thermostat is off because it's not battery-backed up or it's just powered off the system, there could be a problem with the system because it sends a 24 volts to power that thermostat. And if it's not sending 24 volts, you're going to have a blank screen. Good indications to look on that is to look at any kind of float switches that are on your system cuz that could be an indication that you have a drainage problem. That's very common and can be fixed by most homeowners if they have the know-how to do that. I will say with that, it does have where you have to get into an attic, so it does take a little bit more of a person that can find ladders, do things like that. We'll make sure your safety's first anytime you're in an attic because sheetrock repair is expensive. Young Rose.
