Practical answers from our team

AC turning on and off every few minutes

Repeated short starts and stops are different from an AC that runs longer on a hot day. Learn what to record and why sizing, airflow, controls, and equipment condition need checking.

The short answer
  • Repeated runs of only a few minutes can indicate short cycling.
  • Record the pattern and whether the house is actually comfortable.
  • The pattern does not identify one failed component.

Recognize the pattern

Short cycling means the unit starts, runs briefly, stops, and quickly starts again repeatedly. It is different from the longer run time you may see during extreme heat. Note how long the cycles last and whether the home reaches the thermostat setting.

What determines the price of a short-cycling repair?

Ask for a diagnosis before pricing short cycling as a single repair. Thermostat, coil, filter, and refrigerant problems can affect the cycling. The proposal should say which finding it addresses and what work is included.

If the recommendation is replacement, ask why the proposed capacity fits the house. Oversized equipment can contribute to short cycling, so compare the sizing explanation alongside the equipment price.

Do not guess the cause from cycle length

Several conditions can affect cycling, including controls, airflow, equipment problems, or an oversized system. Changing parts or increasing equipment size without diagnosing the cause can leave the comfort problem unresolved.

Arrange service for repeated short cycles

If the AC repeatedly starts and stops after only a few minutes, turn cooling off and arrange service rather than allowing that pattern to continue. Describe when it started and any recent thermostat or filter changes.

Improper sizing for an HVAC system is one of the biggest reasons why a house can be uncomfortable. Whenever a system is oversized cuz the general thumb back in the day was like, "Hey, we'll just we'll just bump you up half a ton." Anyways, it's a terrible idea because it doesn't remove humidity from your house if you oversize it. So, I don't want to oversize that system cuz that creates more problems than whenever the system was undersized. Cuz an undersized system actually does a better job removing humidity from the home than a system that is oversized. And so, if the system is oversized, some symptoms you may be experiencing is high humidity within the house. You may also be experiencing like, you know, during the winter time maybe the furnace is too big for the home as well where it's providing too much heat and you you know, it dries the house out too much. And so, you'll see if your lines on like the glue adhesives will will start to crack and so like that. So, you got you know, if the humidity level doesn't stay maintained within the house, it can those are some symptoms that can happen if it's if it's oversized. And then, whenever the system is oversized especially during the summer time is it'll turn off and on so which is called short cycling. Very very fast and what that does is it doesn't allow the oils that are within that compressor to effectively circulate through the system appropriately. And and so, it's it's very difficult on that system to to short cycle. And so, oversizing the system can result in premature breakdowns, the system not lasting nearly as long as what you want it to. And so, cuz at the end of the we want those systems to last gosh 15 to 20 years if they're sized if they're sized right for the home and you know, everything is it's a perfect install. And so, that's what we want. That's what we want to shoot for. And so, but if it's oversized, it's going to break down more frequently than than than what you want it to. Hey guys, we started this company back in 1988 and I'll tell you summertime in Oklahoma is no joke. Uh before it gets hot, here's five simple things that you can do right now to make sure that your family stays comfortable. First, let's go outside and let's clear anything away from your air conditioner that might be out there leaned up against it where there might be grass, toys, or just anything out there. That's a big deal to give that thing uh some room to breathe. Uh second, let's pull out your air filter, hold it up to the light, and see if see if you can see through it. If you can't, let's go ahead and put in a new one. Third, uh let's pour some white vinegar down your condensate drain line. Uh it'll help keep that thing clear and you know, which helps prevent any water damage inside your home. Fourth, uh go in and drop your thermostat a few degrees and let's let that thing run for about 15 minutes. Let's listen to it. If you hear anything that's unusual or sounds that you might not normally hear, you know, that may be a sign that something's off. Fifth, if your unit's kicking on on and off every couple of minutes, uh let's shut it down and give us a call. We've been taking care of Oklahoma families for over 35 years and we'd be happy to take care of yours, too. Thank you very much. >> Yocum's >> [music]

The pattern matters more than the one symptom. When our technicians show up, we want to know what changed. Did it happen after a storm? Did it start after the filter was replaced? Is it worse in the afternoon? Did the breaker trip? Did you hear a buzz, click, or hum? Those details speed up the diagnosis. And the worst thing you can do is keep forcing a struggling system to run. If something sounds wrong, smells electrical, trips breakers, leaks water, or blows warm air for hours, turn it off and give us a call. A small repair can become a large repair when the system is forced to keep operating while something is failing.

Your system is running non-stop. In July, long run times can be normal, but non-stop operation paired with poor comfort, that's not normal. If the home keeps getting warmer, the system is losing the battle. That can be airflow, refrigerant, mechanical issue, or house load related issues. Here's what you can do. Change the filter if it's dirty. A restricted filter is one of the simplest ways to make an AC struggle. Replace it and give the system time to recover. If it still struggles, the filter wasn't the only problem.

So, short cycling is where your unit kicks on for maybe 2 or 3 minutes, shuts off, and then quickly comes back on. And it's doing that on a repeated cycle. If you're noticing that, shut your system off and call a technician out to your house. That is a huge wear on your compressor. So, the reason it's a huge wear on your compressor is because on startup, it's a huge electrical load, and a lot of times those compressors, if they're short cycling repeatedly, it's going to wear the compressor out. You're going to have to replace your compressor, and those are massive repair bills. So, do yourself a favor, shut the system off, call a technician out before it becomes a major problem. >> Your home. >> [singing] [music]
