Reduce the heat your AC has to remove

Your AC works against the heat entering and being produced inside the house. Curtains, closed openings, cooking choices, and room fans can improve summer comfort in different ways.

The short answer
  • Shade sunny windows and avoid leaving doors or windows open during cooling.
  • Indoor cooking adds heat the AC must remove.
  • Fans help people feel cooler; they do not lower the room temperature.

Keep unnecessary heat outside

Close curtains or blinds when direct summer sun heats the room. Avoid leaving exterior doors or windows open while cooling. If heat gain remains a problem, the discussion should also include window and door seals and attic insulation.

Budget for home improvements after checking everyday habits

Start with the heat-control measures already available in your home: close existing blinds when the sun is heating the room and avoid leaving exterior doors or windows open. Then consider whether the window and door seals or attic insulation need attention.

If you request improvement quotes, have them identify the particular window, door-sealing, or insulation work proposed. These are separate places heat can enter the house. Match each scope with the problem you are trying to solve before budgeting for improvements.

      Reduce avoidable indoor heat

Cooking with the stove or oven adds heat inside the house. Planning meals that use less indoor cooking heat can reduce what the AC needs to remove on a hot afternoon.

        Use fans for people

A room fan moves air across your skin and can make you feel cooler. It does not lower the room’s temperature, so leaving fans on in an empty house is different from cooling the house.

A fan blowing over ice may give local, temporary relief, but it is not a replacement for a working AC. If you need that arrangement to remain comfortable because the system is not cooling, arrange a service evaluation.

So, making sure you're maybe shutting your blinds, make sure that you know, you're not leaving doors open for for extended periods of time or windows open for an extended period of time. Anywhere where heat is going to come into the house, your system's got to cool that air off. Blocking some of the areas where the heat's coming in is going to be a really big deal. Window treatments are really important. Blinds, curtains, anything like that. Making sure doors are sealed well. Uh make sure windows are sealed well. Um you know, if you really want to go above and beyond, you're looking at how your insulation is in in your attic is a really big deal as well. And so, those are just some common areas that whenever we're looking at heat infiltration, we look at those areas pretty much first.

Fans do not lower the temperature of the room, but they can make people feel cooler by moving air across your skin. Everyone likes a fan. I am a fan of fans. You know, and that means fans help people when they're in the room, but leaving every fan on in an empty house is not the same thing as cooling your house. So, that's an important distinction to make.

Turn your fans on. There's a reason that a fan is in almost every room in your home. When the air is moving, we're encouraging evaporation. When we encourage evaporation, it feels cooler in our home. So, any moisture that's on our skin will evaporate a whole lot faster. So, more air equals more potential for evaporation. Turn the fan on your air conditioner. You're going to thank me later. You will feel cooler.

Cook outside. When you're cooking, you're generating a lot of heat, and an air conditioner's job is to take heat from inside the house and moving it outside the house. So, if we're adding heat, we're making it harder on your air conditioner to cool your house off effectively. So, on those hot summer days, go cook outside. Barbecues are always fun, so you can't say no to a barbecue. [Music]

So if you have a east, west, or south facing window, which I know I just took uh you know, 75% of the directions that we can possibly have, make sure that your timing closing those shades, closing the blinds, and shutting the sun out. You know, cuz that UV penetration into the house is really going to rise the temperature. Uh you know, it doesn't take much for it to uh to become a problem. And so, you know, in the afternoon, make sure that all your windows are shut. Make sure that your outside doors aren't moving in and out. You know, make sure if you've got a doggy door or something that it's permanently closed. That way we're not letting go of that precious cold air that we've got, you know, in the house. You know, next is if they've got um say their main unit's down. If they want just a bedroom cool, you know, I'd recommend running to just any local hardware store and picking up a window unit. You know, that right there could help buy some time between maybe, you know, an HVAC tech having an availability or something like that. And you know, really can make at least one room cool. That way you can sleep comfortably.

Golf is a game that gets you outside, right? You're outside. You're in the great outdoors. You're enjoying nature. Also, summertime, you can cook outside. Fire up the Blackstone, fire up the grill. Don't cook indoors because if you cook indoors, using your stove and using your oven introduces heat into the space. If we introduce heat into the space, it means your air conditioner has to work harder. But fire up the grill, cook outside when you can, enjoy the great outdoors while the summer's still alive. And now I got a case of the rights. We are moments away from yeeting this putter across the yard.

You've probably seen this on the news channels and they're talking about, you know, if you're trying to beat the heat, this is the way to do it. Kind of. >> [gasps] >> Anyways, you can feel a difference. It is cold. You do feel a little bit of uh cold air coming off the ice blocks, but but your your temperature and your comfort is really reliant on you staying in this weirdly awkward position. Now, you could probably hold the bowl up and like that's that's pretty nice. Kind of cold. You're going to get a little wet cuz it's going to it's going to condensate. Uh but does it really work? And the answer to that question is it can provide some semblance of some comfort. Uh it's going to add humidity to your house if you do this um cuz you're throwing a fan over water. So, the results are dependent on you being able to stay in one position. Now, that's not super comfortable. That's not really idealistic. It's not going to help a ton if your house is already 85° then it can then it can it can help cuz you're going to be feeling that cold air across it. However, it's not a long-term solution. And it's not fun to do. Summer is a time where you're supposed to play, go outside, uh feel some nice breeze. If you are hot inside your house, um I the best thing that you can do is make sure your system's running efficiently. And if you're found yourself where your air conditioning system's not working or your air conditioning system is and you still have to do this, that's a pretty telltale sign that your system's not doing what it's supposed to. Uh and that'd be a great reminder to say, "Hey, I'm having to hold this ice and use a fan to keep myself cold. I should probably call my HVAC guy." Do that. Have a fantastic day and stay cool this summer. >> Your >> [singing] [music] >> home.
