Practical answers from our team

Build a thermostat schedule around your day

A thermostat schedule can change the temperature before you wake or arrive home. Match the schedule to your routine and equipment instead of repeatedly adjusting it by hand.

The short answer
  • Start with your waking, leaving, returning, and sleeping times.
  • Schedule recovery before you need the house comfortable.
  • Heat pumps may need a different approach to winter setbacks.

Set an overnight and morning schedule

A basic thermostat stays at the temperature you choose until someone changes it. A programmable or smart thermostat can make planned changes for you, such as returning to a warmer winter morning setting before the household wakes.

For summer, plan the return to your comfortable cooling setting before you get home. The schedule should account for the house’s recovery time rather than simply switching at your arrival time.

Compare thermostat price, features, and expected savings

Compare the features you will actually use. A basic thermostat stays where you set it; a programmable or smart model can make planned changes, such as warming the house before the family wakes. Ask for the installed price of the option that provides the schedule you want.

Include comfort and convenience in the comparison instead of assuming a fixed dollar saving. Utility savings depend on how you use the thermostat, and large temperature swings can mean long recovery times. Choose the schedule around your household before weighing the upgrade price.

Choose settings that fit your equipment

Treat the schedule as a comfort tool, not a guaranteed percentage off the utility bill. In winter, some heat-pump setbacks can reduce efficiency or leave a long recovery period. Ask which thermostat strategy fits your equipment before making large changes.

the pros of a basic thermostat like I have at home is you just set it and you forget about it there's no frills to go along with it wherever you set it it's going to stay unless you have an issue the cons of that is you don't have like myself at home I would like to wake up with it 68 de but then it to heat up at 70° but I have to go manually do that every morning and risk waking everybody up walking through the hallway with a with a smart thermostat I could sleep at 65° overnight and I could have it heat up to 70 at about 6:00 a.m. and by time everybody else getting up and around it would be nice and warm for them a lot of homeone owners will ask if a smart thermostat can help with their utility bills it can help how significantly I don't quite know I know for me you don't want a big swing in your temperature you don't want to set it down to 62 and then expect it to catch up to 70 when you want it to be warm and let that be efficient because you're going to have such a long run time

uh typical thermostat installation is going to take about 30 minutes you got some variables depending on how it's wired a lot of older systems will have a four wire set up for thermostat wire that could have been pulled in the 80s or '90s and if you're going to upgrade to a Smart thermostat you're definitely going to have to pull a new strand to be able to have appropriate amount of wires it can be complicated for somebody that's mechanically inclined they they may be able to figure it out but if if you don't really have much understanding of electrical or feel confident in doing that I would definitely recommend letting a professional do it

I would recommend a thermostat upgrade. If If you want to keep it simple, then by all means you can go with the simple non-programmable. Most folks these days do want to transition into something a little bit more high-tech. You can have a basic programmable thermostat, which is just going to follow a program that you will set at the thermostat itself, and you can have a smart thermostat, which can be connected via Wi-Fi to your phone. You can have an app to to coincide with that thermostat, and you can have control from your cell phone wherever you may be.

hey I'm Philip with Y bro and Suns and today we're going to talk to you a little bit about thermostats as you can see we have a pretty strong thermostat game here at the shop these are old thermostats that we've condemned over the years no duplicates on the wall anywhere we also have a couple of pretend thermostats here like this one here people often get frustrated when we tried to adjust this looking at all the thermostats we have on the wall here you can tell we've come a long way with the technology typically a thermostat has a 5-year warranty as long as it's installed by a professional to say they Last 5 Years I'd say most do a lot of them do have issues with uh switches getting stuck contacts inside the thermostats getting stuck or the buttons not reacting to touch before the 5-year warranty is up

we're taking a look at the thermostat so this is the uh brain of the entire indoor air system and so whatever the temperature is at this location the system assumes that every room in the house is like this unless there's independent sensors so it's really important to kind of have your thermostat located somewhere probably close to a return vent um which this one is that's really good news we've been in the Home Comfort game since 88 here in OKC share this with a friend who's in need of some serious Home Comfort help

I just read this New York Times article that says it's okay to let your AC run all day even if you're not home. And you know what? They are absolutely right in most cases. So if you have a single stage system onoff switch or it's either off or 100% on, I would still say that you need a programmable thermostat to kind of variable that set point a little bit to save the most energy. However, if you have a variable capacity, variable speed system, uh you're good to sit there and just let that thing limp along all day long. That way it's at the perfect set point no matter what time you might arrive at home. Also, Honeywell did a great job with these thermostats. But if you're still rocking one of these thermostats, give us a call. It's time to upgrade to the Yarro home thermostat.

Again, Tucker, it's September. I don't wanna think about setting my heater on yet. I get it. But have a smart thermostat or a programmable thermostat where you set your band of what your tolerable temperature is. Because as you know, September, October, and even sometimes November in Oklahoma can cause you to run both your AC and your heater in the same day, and a smart thermostat is going to allow you to set a band, an acceptable range of temperature. Don't push those any closer than, like, five or six degrees would be my... You know, you can probably push them as close as four, but, like, that's gonna cause some unnecessary switching on the system. But set that band of, like, if you're gonna say, "Well, we want it to cool at 74, and we want the heater to come on at 68," make sure that you've got it set to where it is in the acceptable band so that you're not having to think about it. It's just done and taken care of for you.

You know, there's going to be a bunch of different settings. We got our fan settings. I would just leave your fan on auto, that way it only runs when the system is set to run. And then as far as our temperature settings, you can go heating, cooling. We use auto, just so that we don't have to sit here and bounce around our thermostat all day long. Auto is the the setting that I would recommend, that way for these Oklahoma spring time evenings and days, you know, we we can bounce back and forth between heat and AC requirements.
