Practical answers from our team

Choose an air filter that fits your HVAC system

The right air filter balances particle capture with the airflow your equipment needs. Compare size, depth, replacement needs, and upgrade options before buying the highest rating.

The short answer
  • Start with the filter size and type approved for the equipment.
  • Particle capture and airflow both belong in the decision.
  • A thicker filter needs a compatible cabinet or rack.
  • Filtration supplements moisture control, cleaning, and suitable ventilation.

Start with the equipment and filter opening

Write down the required filter dimensions and the type your equipment accepts before comparing packages. The filter needs to fit the rack or grille properly; buying a deeper filter is not a drop-in upgrade if the cabinet is not designed for it.

If you want to change the filtration setup, ask us to evaluate the available space and airflow. A filter cabinet, return duct, and blower work together. The choice should fit that system rather than a general recommendation from a hardware-store aisle.

Compare filter cost and replacement frequency

Compare the price of the correct filter with how often it needs replacing. A higher purchase price may come with a different replacement interval, as in our comparison of 1-inch and deeper filters. Ask which filter fits your system and how often that exact filter needs replacing before comparing the ongoing expense.

      Balance particle capture with airflow

MERV describes particle-filtering performance. A higher-rated filter can capture smaller particles, but the number alone does not tell you how it will behave in your system. Airflow resistance also depends on the filter design, its surface area, and how loaded it becomes.

A restrictive filter in an already undersized return can add to an airflow problem. The useful question is which effective filter the system can accommodate. Ask for an airflow assessment when moving to a different filter type, especially if rooms already have weak air delivery.

Depth can change the maintenance plan

Our filter comparisons show why surface area matters: a deeper pleated filter can provide more filtering area than a shallow one. That does not make every thick filter identical or guarantee a six-month interval.

Use the interval for the actual product and check its condition. Dust, pets, and operating hours still affect loading. Keep a record of when the filter was installed and what it looked like at the next check so the schedule matches your home.

          Set realistic air-quality goals

A central HVAC filter works on air passing through the system. A portable air cleaner is designed for a room or area. Either can reduce airborne particles, but neither removes every pollutant or replaces dealing with its source.

If the concern is dust, odors, moisture, or allergy triggers, describe that concern before selecting equipment. Source control and suitable ventilation come first, with filtration as a supplement. Avoid buying on a promise that one filter will solve every air-quality or health problem.

all filters are rated by their Merve rating um that is the actual particles that they can actually collect reason we would want to go with a lower mve rating is because it is going to affect that air flow when you put a more expensive higher quality filter in there you're actually blocking more air flow

so this is a pretty good air filter now being that this 1 in is going to be a lot cheaper than this 2 in but with how much wear and tear you're going to do on your blower motor by not having enough air flow through there it would actually benefit to put that money into it a little bit more of expensive filter but not affect the unit let's look at another one of the filters is probably my favorite filter especially if you're worried about allergies and and other factors like that this is a 4 a 5 in filter um it also is rated for MF 16 which means it's going to collect a lot more of those dust particles so this is actually great this is actually a carbon filter too another benefit of this you could go 6 months without changing this out now give it that varies too but for the most part you can go 6 months as opposed to a month to 3 months let's see how this one goes so as we can see with that more surface area because of the thicker filter we get way better air flow

this is always a shock to me um but the air quality inside your home often will be worse than that of outside yeah and why is that well it's because we're trap where we trap it all inside and then it really doesn't have a way to escape unless it's through that filter so we have to capture it in the filter but the only way our filter can capture it is if it's a new filter um or at least a regularly changed filter all right I'm I'm going to put you on the spot make it happen Okay how often are you changing your filters so I have a 5 in HEPA filter so I only have to change it once every six months oh wow are you doing that yes h

so as we can see with that more surface area because of the thicker filter we get way better air flow so definitely a filter like this comes in handy if you have a high allergy problem all around this filter would be great for every home

What's the difference in these air filters? MERV 4 vs. 10 vs. 16

This right here is a MERV 4 filter. You can see my hand through this filter. it. Yeah. You can see through it. Wow. How hard do you think it would be to breathe through this thing? I think it'd be pretty easy. Super easy. Yeah. This isn't going to catch much. Okay. However, we see a lot of these out there. Um this is a MERV 10. It is more than doubly efficient. Both of these are fiberglass filters. Okay. But this MERV 4 here on in the brown cardboard Mhm. is basically just a fiberglass mesh. Really, you know, just loosely woven. going to catch big dust particles and some hair and dander. Whereas this right here, this is a fiberglass mesh as well except it's more of a fiberglass weave, I believe is what they call it. Okay. This right here is a MERV 10. So it's more than double as efficient as catching at catching dust than this is. Then for the real pro homeowner out there, this is what I have in my house. This is a MERV 16. This is hospital-grade filtration. The top end of filters that they sell is a MERV 16. So this is the most efficient filter that they sell as far as the efficiency of catching dust. Okay. So you'll notice that it's black. Uh that is because this has a little bit of an add-on as well. This is This is a high-dollar filter. Uh this is a MERV 16 or activated carbon filter. Wow. What the activated carbon does, it's just like running uh your water through a carbon filter. Oh, right. We're getting rid of even more stuff.

When you go to the hardware store, there's lots of filters that you can buy. They have cheap filters that you can almost see through the standard MV8 MV 10 filter and then the more expensive hypoallergenic filters. I recommend that you stick with the mid-range MV8 MV 10 filter. The cheaper filters don't catch enough air. The more expensive filters realistically catch too much air, hurt the blower motor, decrease the lifespan of that motor, therefore shortening the life of your HVAC system. On a side note, stay away from those stinking scent diffusers. They tear the components of your system up. [singing] [music]

you can imagine if this is getting dirty how much air flow would drop how fast that ball would drop but I do want to show you another filter this is the same MV rating MV 8 now the difference in this is this is actually a 2-in filter a lot of people would want to think well this is a bigger filter I could go longer you could possibly go longer but like I said even with 1 in or this 2 in here you want to change them out about every month to 3 months let's look at this and see how it's going to go so as you can see this one is a lot better at uh letting air through because of that surface area we're not dropping all the way down we're kind of staying right there in the The Middle
