Practical answers from our team

Choosing Plumbing Fixtures You Can Service

Compare faucets, shower fixtures, and toilets by fit, replacement-part support, and current written terms. A style you like should also have a clear service path when a component wears out.

The short answer
  • Confirm the exact model and installation fit.
  • Ask how replacement cartridges and other parts are obtained.
  • Treat brand rankings as experience, not universal guarantees.

Include future service in the purchase

When choosing a fixture, ask which model you are buying and how it fits the existing plumbing. Include the parts needed for installation in the comparison rather than looking only at the visible finish.

Ask how a replacement cartridge or other service part would be identified and obtained. A clear model number and parts path are useful long after the fixture is installed.

Compare fixture prices with parts and warranty support

Compare the fixture price with replacement-parts access and warranty support. In our June 2026 recording, we described Kohler as often costing us more than Delta and explained why price affected our choice between products we considered comparable.

Ask for current model-specific prices and support details. Include access to replacement cartridges in that conversation alongside the initial purchase.

Use brand opinions as a starting point

Our technicians’ brand experiences can help frame the questions to ask. They do not mean every product from a brand uses the same parts, has identical quality, or receives the same warranty.

Compare current support for the exact model. Ask who handles a problem, what is covered, and whether labor and installation work are included in the written terms.

Assess an existing fixture before replacing it

A leak does not always mean the whole fixture has to be replaced. A service visit may identify a worn cartridge or connection that can be addressed separately.

Ask for the diagnosed cause and the proposed repair before deciding between repair and an upgrade. If mineral buildup is recurring, discuss the water conditions along with the fixture choice.

Sandra, what kind of toilet should I buy? >> Listen, how you go matters, right? Where you go matters. It's all about location, location, location. And where location starts is the toilet itself. So, S through D tier. And here we go. S tier is Mansfield and Toto. Those two things, I think, don't test this at home, but I think those could probably flush a cue ball from a pool table. A is going to be Kohler. B is American Standard, and there is no C tier, guys. And D tier is anything that you get from Glacier Bay Glacier Bay, ProSource, or really any of the like big box store kind of like lower tier brands of brands that you might recognize. Get it from a supply house. >> Young Rome. >> [singing] [music]

If the faucet from Amazon, uh, breaks, uh, Uncle Bezos isn't going to be too keen to give you your money back. He's going to happily tell you that shoppers also bought a crappy water filter to put under it to make sure that it lasted longer, not included with purchase. Getting any type of warranty support or actual like product quality life isn't going to be there. You're not going to be able to get anything registered. You're not going to be able to get anything held to warranty. Uh, the parts and replacement, if there are any, aren't going to be in existence, hardly ever. Because a lot of times these are made specifically for these products because they are super good and they require a unique cartridge or a unique sediment filter. Don't buy these from Amazon. Don't buy a generic brand from Lowe's, Home Depot. Don't do it. If you can avoid it at all cost, do so. Run far, run fast because you're going to keep water where it should be, coming in and out of the faucet properly and into a drain. Because if we buy one from, you know, any of the ones mentioned down here, well, I can't promise you that. >> Your bros. >> [music and singing]

Pfister, they make an okay product, but let me tell you, it is not going to be the prettiest thing to look at. It's going to be pretty generic. It's going to be commercial grade. It's going to last you a little while. You're probably not going to have too many issues. We can get cartridges and sediment filters with universal parts pretty easily. Getting the warranty support on these things, forget about it. I said there was like a 5-year warranty on it, but like trying to get that serviced, I don't know if you've sat on a international support line trying to talk to somebody about a faucet. Doesn't work. So, Pfister, you're in the C category. >> You're out. >> [music]

If you have hard water and you're not going to get it treated, you're going to burn a lot of money on like a ice machine, specifically like the Sonic like pebble ice is a huge deal. That is going to be one place where you're going to have a lot of burn as far as time invested in it not working if you have hard water. That is a really sensitive piece of equipment and it is going to cause problems if you don't have a water treatment solution in place. And so, before we start looking at expensive like shower heads like a rain head or something like that or like a like a pressure jet head. If you're going to spend money on your plumbing, I would start with a water treatment solution and then go to the fun stuff like a pebble ice machine and a jet head on a shower or rain head or something like that.

What is your faucets and fixtures tier list? >> Listen, it's a big decision how you shower and your shower head matters a whole heck of a lot. So, make sure that you listen to this list. S tier through D tier, here we go. S tier is Delta. Any of the Delta commercial grade level stuff is going to treat you so nice. You're going to be glad that you did it every time you shower. A is Kohler. Kohler, similar deal. B Moen. Uh it depends on what you get. There's a large variance there. C is Pfister. Kind of run far and fast from Pfister. And D is anything you buy on Amazon specifically like Glacier Bay or ProSource. Run far, run fast. You're going to be disappointed in that shower. >> YOLO. >> [singing] [music]

Kohler is an A-tier product. They're just a little bit below and here and they're back in the A-tier again. If you saw our toilets ranked video, spoiler alert, they were in the same category. They're in A-tier. And why are they in the A-tier here? For a fixture list, Kohler has really good warranty support. Their cartridges and their sediment filters are easily accessible, easily findable. They have years of backstock for stuff that they sold 10-15 years ago. The A-tier category comes with this marker again. Most of the time for us, Kohler is a more expensive product than Delta because of we're paying more for it. You're going to pay more for it. And we don't believe that we should charge you more for an equivalent product when there is an equivalent product out there. So, when it comes to a head-to-head between Delta and Kohler, the edge goes to Delta because of the pricing factor. Outcomes, warranty support, all of that is the same with Kohler. Kohler's a great product and ultimately it's a product that we believe in, but if we can get it for a better price, it would be a net S-tier. >> Your home. >> [singing] [music]

Not all faucets and fixtures are created equal. And why do we believe that the Delta faucet and fixture are the best for your home? Well, one, they have a lifetime warranty. So, if something fails on that, we don't have to argue with anybody. We just say, "Hey, Mr. Manufacturer, this thing failed. Get us a new one." And guess what? They make it happen. No questions asked because Delta stands behind their product. Also, bonus point, say maybe you're the second owner of a Delta faucet, meaning the warranty didn't transfer to you because it's to the first homeowner. Well, the cartridges and the replacement uh sediment filters on the fixtures and faucets are easy to get a hold of. We don't ever have to worry. They are constantly back stocking stuff from 15, 20 years ago because they know how long their products last. So, Delta really stands behind not only that initial purchase. It is going to be a higher price product. It is a great fixture and faucet. That is the S tier product for us when it comes to fixtures for your house. >> Your home. >> [singing] [music]

Moen is one of the most easily serviceable fixtures out there. Has a lot of universal parts, universal cartridge swaps, universal sediment filters. Here's the problem though, is the quality that comes with a lot of times kind of leaning towards that universal side means that we're going to have degraded life. We're going to have degraded outcomes. We're going to have faucets stop working or start leaking when they shouldn't have or we're going to have stuff get stopped up when maybe it shouldn't have. And so Moen is typically in the plumbing world seen as a really high tier product. The price a lot of times matches, but because of the universality of a lot of the repair pieces, it makes it to where less than adequate repairs happen on what is otherwise a pretty good product. The warranty on it, I got to be honest, the warranty is good. It's like a 10-year for the most part. They're able to to stand behind their products, but whenever it comes to the longevity, making sure that water stays where it's supposed to or comes out when it's supposed to, I can't really stand behind Moen whenever we have Delta and Kohler as similar price point options. >> Your home. >> [singing] [music]
