HVAC Warranty Questions Before You Buy or Repair

A parts warranty is only one part of the repair conversation. Find the equipment record, separate parts from labor coverage, and ask who handles the work before assuming what is covered.

The short answer
  • Identify the equipment and confirm its actual warranty record.
  • Ask separately about parts, labor, and installation support.
  • Check the applicable maintenance and documentation requirements.
  • Know which company to contact when a problem develops.

Start with the equipment record

Before asking whether a repair is covered, identify the equipment involved. The brand and serial number are useful starting points for locating its warranty information. If a label is not safely accessible, ask the servicing company to help identify the system.

Many manufacturers provide a warranty lookup. Use the manufacturer’s own information or have your contractor help confirm the record. Keep that information with the installation paperwork so a later service conversation can focus on the actual equipment and terms.

Is extended warranty coverage included in the price?

Ask the contractor to separate manufacturer coverage from workmanship or extended coverage in the proposal. In our December 2025 recording, an optional extended heat-pump warranty could be included in the upfront price.

Ask which coverage is included in each current quote and which is an extra-cost option. Compare the written terms before choosing the price you want to pay.

Separate parts from labor and installation support

Ask what each coverage statement means. A quoted parts warranty does not, by itself, answer whether labor is covered. Ask about the work needed to diagnose and complete a repair, and have the company explain any charges that are separate from the covered part.

Also ask how the installer supports its own work. Manufacturer equipment coverage and the contractor’s response to an installation problem are different questions. Written answers are more useful than assuming a long parts-warranty number means every future service expense disappears.

Confirm the requirements for your equipment

Ask what records and maintenance the applicable warranty requires. Keep the installation and service information together, and ask the contractor to explain anything in the terms that is unclear.

Requirements should come from the warranty for your equipment. Do not apply a statement about one manufacturer or product to every system, and do not assume that a missed visit automatically settles whether a particular repair is covered. Have the actual coverage reviewed before deciding how to proceed.

Know who will help with the next step

Before accepting an installation proposal, ask who handles warranty questions and how you request service. If a problem repeats, explain that history to the servicing company and ask how it will evaluate the issue.

Our experience is that the relationship with the installing company matters when equipment needs attention. Choose a team that will explain what it found, what coverage applies, and which options are available to you.

So, we're going to have a 10-year parts, 10-year compressor, and a uh 10-year indoor warranties. A heat pump system is going to come with a multitude of warranties. So, there's manufacturer, and then there's warranties that we as Yaron Suns offer. So, let's start with manufacturer because that is something that you're going to get no matter where you purchase this heat pump from. So, we're going to say Linux, we're going to say American Standard, and we're going to say uh like the Dykan lineup. Those three have almost identical manufacturer warranties. So, we're going to have a 10-year parts, 10-year compressor, and a uh 10-year indoor warranty. So, the blower, the electric heat strips, all of that. Here at Yarro Suns, most of the time whenever we are talking about upgrading someone's home comfort with a heat pump, we're looking for something that's more efficient and more worry-free of a system. And what we want to do along with that is you can opt to have our standard warranty, which is a one-year workmanship warranty where if something fails within that first year, we'll cover it, no charge. However, if you would like a worry-free system for pretty much the life of that system, we offer a 10-year extended warranty that we often will just work into the price right up front. [music]

I know for a fact that what I'm about to say is going to ruffle some feathers. However, you people need to know this. The brand on the HVAC system matters significantly less than you think. You're thinking, "Colby, what a terrible take." It's terrible take. I know that HVAC brand X never had issues with it. It's brand, you know, amazing. It's got amazing uh advertisings and I and I fell for all the quality stuff that they talk about. But anyways, uh no matter what the system brand is, if you're not partnering with a company that's going to stand behind their work regardless of the situation, then you're going to have problems. You're going to be spending more money than what you want to. You're going to be spending spending money on repairs that you were not anticipating because you just bought this fancy HVAC system and company X isn't standing standing behind the install. We're going to do our due diligence to make sure that the system was installed correctly from the start. Absolutely, but there are situations in which it's it's a lemon system. It's not working right. It's not doing what was promised from the manufacturer. So, it's like, "Okay, at that point, what does what does Yarbrough's do?" Well, anecdotally, uh this happened yesterday. We had to take care of a customer because something broke down on a system that we installed. It was a nice system whenever we installed it. But for whatever reason, she's having the same issue again and again, and it's you know, we've done our due diligence. We've done everything that we can to make sure the system run properly. We installed it correctly. We've done, you know, you know, dotted our eyes, crossed our tees, but it's not working. So, what do you do? You do what's right. You take care of the customer, make sure that they're taken care of for the long run cuz at the end of the day, I'd rather have a customer for life than lose one over something that's, you know, obviously at the end of the day, I understand it's not our fault that the system went out again. Uh we didn't manufacture it. We installed it. And it's having issues. So, what happens when fancy brand equipment doesn't work the way it's supposed to? You find HVAC company that's going to stand behind their work. That's your first decision. Find a company that is going to stand behind the equipment that they installed, no matter the brand.

any company worth their salt will offer a maintenance plan of some sort, whether it's one visit or two visits. What maintenance is required and do you offer service plans? This is a great question for a homeowner to ask. What maintenance is required? Well, that is the default of the manufacturer. It doesn't mean that it has to be seen twice a year. So, once for this and once for that. It can be done at the same time, but a manufacturer states that in order for the equipment warranty to be valid, an HVAC professional has to maintain it at least once a year. Now, the second half of this question is, do you offer service plans? that company is interested in creating a legacy brand uh like we are, you know, I I don't want to just sell you one HVAC system. I want to be here for your next home and your kids' home and and so on and so forth. We've been in business for 37 years and plan to be here for many more, God willing. We're in the relational business and to me, if a company doesn't offer service plans, it tells me that they're not interested in that relationship.

Hey, have you ever wondered how to look up the warranty on your AC unit? Well, let me show you a little trick to do it yourself. So, first thing you want to do is you want to make sure you know what brand of equipment you have. And then after that, you want to go to a data plate on that equipment and you want to find the serial number. Next thing you want to do is you want to take your cell phone and you want to do a quick Google search and just put in the brand of your system and then warranty look up. And this will usually give you a website to where you can go look up the warranty. On this one, we're going to just take a Trane warranty look up. It's going to have in that website a place where you can put your serial number and put in that serial number and it'll spit out what your actual warranty is on it. Well, that's all I got to say about this helpful hint.

customer called us and said that she was having an issue and we were out here about a month ago. Um, you know, after reviewing everything after looking over the system, um, you know, it it it could have been just an oversight on our part on on not accurately looking at the at the refrigerant pressures and and not completely understanding what we were seeing, but we came back out here, got the customer taken care of. You know, she's happy, we're happy. Whenever we have a call back, we like to know what we did wrong for the customer to call us and and not just not just call to yell and say they got somebody else out, but you know, we like an opportunity to get back out here and and you know, see where we messed up, if we messed up, and and you know, get the get the customer taken care of and and that leaves everybody satisfied. We want to avoid $7,000 installs that lead to really, really expensive problems. Guys, whenever we have contractors like this coming in, a lot of times the the warranties themselves are with the manufacturer of the equipment they're installing. So, the manufacturers require that the install had had a verification that it was installed right, that there was a maintenance plan to ensure that that equipment is being maintained over time. And when these contractors aren't maintaining that equipment, they're not providing any any of the install verification, it could possibly mean that those warranties are void. And if you, the homeowner, call the manufacturer, they're not going to talk to the individual homeowner. They're going to defer to the installing contractor. And whenever they're selling you these things, they're they're pitching it in a way where there's a 10-year parts warranty. What that does not cover is labor. If a lot of that stuff wasn't wasn't verified, the install, the maintenance, it could potentially mean that even that 10-year parts warranty could be void. Your home. >> [music]
