When a mini-split is a good fit

A mini-split can be useful for an addition, a room with different comfort needs, or a space without ductwork. Compare that targeted solution with repairing or extending central air.

The short answer
  • Mini-splits can serve a room or space that conventional ductwork cannot easily reach.
  • Separate zones can suit different comfort preferences.
  • Existing usable ducts may make central equipment worth comparing.
  • Choose the location and capacity as part of a professional design.

Start with the room you need to serve

A mini-split is worth considering when a room or addition cannot be served well by the existing heating and cooling layout. Limited attic space or no practical duct route can make a separate system useful.

First describe the goal: conditioning a new addition, improving one troublesome room, or creating separate temperature control. If a bedroom only recently became uncomfortable, investigate the existing system before assuming it needs another unit.

How should you compare mini-split installation costs?

Ask for the total installation price for every room you want to control. Mini-split installation can involve labor comparable to central-equipment replacement, and installing several separate mini-splits can cost more than replacing a central system where ductwork already exists.

Separate room temperatures may still be worth the investment for your household. Compare a quote for those particular rooms with the central-system option before deciding.

Compare with the central system you already have

If the house already has usable ductwork, compare central-system work with the full cost and scope of multiple mini-splits. Adding several indoor units is a different project from serving one room.

An existing duct problem may be repairable. Ask whether restoring or redesigning the air path would solve the complaint before buying a separate system. The useful comparison is the complete project that meets your comfort goal, not the price of an individual box.

Choose zones and indoor locations deliberately

Separate controls can be helpful when people want different temperatures in different spaces. That is one of the main reasons to consider a zoned solution instead of asking one central thermostat to satisfy everyone.

Indoor units are not all wall-mounted. Our installations also include ceiling cassettes and configurations that use an attic location. Discuss the layout, where air will be delivered, and what will be visible in the room before choosing the equipment.

          Plan the whole installation

Have the proposed system sized for the space and its heating and cooling needs. Ask about the indoor and outdoor locations, controls, required connections, condensate management, and service access so those details are included in the proposal.

This is professional heating and cooling equipment. Refrigerant work and electrical testing belong with a qualified technician. A targeted system still needs a complete installation and service plan.

            Keep the new system serviceable

Before installation is finished, ask to be shown the filter access, normal control settings, and the required maintenance schedule. The details depend on the model you select.

Keep the indoor air path unobstructed and the outdoor unit clear of debris. Report changing performance, unusual sounds, or water where it does not belong so the cause can be checked. A small system deserves the same attention to normal operation as a central one.

what's up with mini splits mini splits are great when you need a heat or cool one room they're also wonderful when you have situations where you can't heat or cool an area with a conventional heat and air unit so some are wall mounted some actually can mount like a regular heat and air unit in an attic and then some can actually be flush with your ceiling such as this cassette so it makes it really nice to heat and cool this area with multiple zones to where we can control each room individually it really makes a great option when you don't have like this place an attic space to put duct work

So many splits do have their application because they have the singular focus of a room. They have the ability to be installed just about anywhere and they have crazy high efficiency metrics. And here is where the rubber meets the road is when it comes to those pieces of equipment though, you have to know that they are made almost as disposable pieces of equipment. So if something fails, it is going to be cheaper for you almost every time to rip that thing off the wall, get a new one and slap it on and away you go. And let's think about this from a capitalistic standpoint. Planned obsolescence is kind of in play there. If it's designed as a disposable piece of equipment, well, we can move more boxes as a manufacturer. And when I say we, I am speaking in the royal we. We do not manufacture mini splits, obviously. We are just an HVAC and plumbing company who services all this this stuff. Hey guys, hope you enjoyed that video. The question of is a mini split worth it? Is a very nuanced answer. One, I don't know of many technicians who like working on it. Two, I don't know of many homeowners who have had a successful DIY install last more than a couple of years. Three, lifespan of these units. So, whenever we look at the lifespan of a central AC unit, so condenser, gas furnace, air handler, all that. We look at the lifespan as 15 plus years is about where we want to see those live. And once we get to that point, we know, hey, we've had a great life out of this thing. We're living on a little bit of borrowed time, but it's nothing to see a system last 20 years. On a mini split, [music] that number is somewhere down near 10, maybe 12, if it's installed properly. But, if you go to Reddit, if you go to the Energy Star and start reading repair forums on these things, a lot of these are failing at the three to five year mark. Because as we've talked about before, Energy Star suggests 80% of an air conditioner's life is contingent on the day that it's installed. And so, with a mini split, if it's DIY'd the day that it's installed being done by you, I have all the faith in the world that that you can do it, but [music] it matters a lot on how clear the refrigerant lines are. Did we pull a vacuum? Are those full or not full, but free of any dust, debris, non-condensables? Because if they have any non-condensables in the line set from an install like that, because it's a split line set, well, then we have a problem because that is going to shred the inside of our compressor, it's going to shorten the life of our compressor, and really and truly make it to where this piece of equipment fails way before it probably should have. You can control the destiny of your home comfort at the click of a button only if you install this little mini split. And are they actually worth it? Is this comfort nirvana?" You have to consider the cost to benefit analysis, which [music] is, do I need this one room cooled more than I need maybe my whole house cooled? If we're able to get duct work to a place, it is always more worth it to have a split system installed in the home or a a ducted package unit installed into the home versus a singular room control. Because that singular room control, we're going to spend 7 $8,000 to put this in and we're only controlling the temperature of this one space versus on a split system. If we're installing a split system over here, well, now we're going to spend, you know, 10 to $125,000, but we're controlling the temperature of the entire house. Hope you enjoyed the video. can a heat pump heat a whole house yes that we can definitely heat a whole house with a heat pump especially if we calculate the load and that that's where it's going to be crucial is you need to calculate what your heat load is going to be on that house it's not hard it it takes a little bit of work of measuring and seeing how things are and we can definitely do a calculations on what you need for your home that's always what seems like when people don't have what they need it's because somebody came out there and they just sold them on the idea of a heat pump and they didn't look into what you actually need to have that heat you actually want [Music]

So, let's get into it. Are mini splits actually worth it? Here we go. I don't know if they are. Whenever I say I don't know if a mini split is worth it, it's because the cost of a mini split is [music] comparable to a split system. It takes about the same amount of labor as it does to install a mini split as it would replace an existing piece of equipment. And so, a lot of the calls that we get is, "Hey, I think I might want to go with a mini split." And you have central ductwork and you have the workings and kind of the intra the the network and the infra structure in your house to support a central AC system. At that point, the ability to replace, repair, and the lifespan of a central unit, meaning we have an air handler or furnace and an outside unit, meaning condenser or heat pump, the ability to have that in place and a central and having your central air go through a ductwork system is much more valuable to you as the homeowner than having to go and say, "Well, we want a mini split in this room and a mini split in this room." Because by the time we go and install three, four mini splits, whatever it is, well, we're going to be well above the cost of replacing your central HVAC unit. Hope you guys enjoyed the video.
