Tankless Water Heater Maintenance

Tankless water heaters still need maintenance. Mineral buildup and the installed model’s requirements should guide a professional service plan, especially when your home has hard water.

The short answer
  • Tankless equipment still needs routine service.
  • Hard water makes mineral buildup an important maintenance consideration.
  • Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model and water conditions.

Minerals can build up inside the heater

A tankless heater does not store a tank of hot water, but mineral deposits can still collect where water is heated. Descaling removes that buildup as part of the equipment’s maintenance.

If your hot-water performance changes, ask for an assessment. Do not assume every temperature problem is scale or that a cleaning will repair every failure.

Budget for tankless maintenance and water conditions

Ask for the price of a descaling visit and the service interval appropriate for your water conditions. Our maintenance recommendation is annual attention, with more frequent service where water is especially hard. Confirm the schedule against the manual for your exact unit.

If performance has already changed, ask whether the quote covers maintenance or assessment of an existing problem. Mineral buildup can affect the heat exchanger, so establish what service is needed before comparing prices.

Set the interval for your equipment

Discuss the service interval using your model’s manual, water conditions, and maintenance history. Our technicians may recommend more frequent attention where mineral buildup is a recurring problem.

Keep records of service dates and what was performed. That makes it easier to discuss a change in performance and to check the maintenance requirements attached to your equipment.

Plan maintenance and water treatment together

Ask whether measured water hardness calls for a treatment discussion as well as equipment service. Treatment choices and descaling requirements should be evaluated together rather than assuming one removes the need for the other.

Have the descaling procedure and other internal service performed by a qualified professional following the installed unit’s instructions. A short demonstration does not replace those instructions.

This is more so us protecting your warranty because the electric tankless water heater companies do not warranty scale buildup, and that is the thing that we fight the most with electric tankless water heaters because of how much power or, like, wattage it pulls at a single time, it causes more hard water to build up. How often would you recommend someone do this process on their tankless water heater? >> They recommend you do it once a year. Uh, if you have really hard water or anything like that, I recommend doing it twice a year. >> Okay. >> That way you know you keep it in good shape. It's more efficient this way. If that calcium builds up inside there, it's going to take it longer to heat and it's not going to get it as hot. So, that's why you want to do this as often at least once a year. >> Your home. >> [singing] [music]

The water softener, it is one of the biggest things you can do if you have hard water. I prefer the salt type water softeners myself because that way it softens the water, it doesn't just condition.
