Should You Repair or Replace Your Water Heater?

Choose between water-heater repair and replacement by confirming the failure first, including the source of a recurring puddle, then comparing your heater’s age, repair scope, replacement scope, and current written terms. A repair-cost percentage can guide the conversation, but it is not an automatic rule.

The short answer
  • Confirm what failed before choosing repair or replacement.
  • Use equipment age and repair cost as decision aids, not automatic rules.
  • Compare complete written repair and replacement scopes, including current written terms.

Find out what actually failed

A failed heating element is a different problem from a leaking tank. Ask what was tested, which component failed, and whether the proposed repair addresses the cause of your hot-water problem. An older heater does not automatically require replacement, and a younger heater does not automatically justify every repair. Its condition and the specific failure matter.

A puddle beneath a water heater does not by itself establish that the tank needs replacement. Identify the water source before deciding between repair and replacement.

Compare repair cost with replacement scope

Get the repair price and the current replacement price before deciding. Use 50% as a discussion point: when the repair exceeds half the price of a new water heater, consider replacement. A less expensive repair on a heater under about eight years old may be worth considering. Ask us to apply that comparison to your heater's age and the actual quotes. It is a useful starting point for the decision, not an automatic replacement rule.

For drain-valve or gas-control repair paths, the recording published October 5, 2026 states about $425 to $700, depending on the part. This is a recorded example, not a current quote or offer. Request separate itemized quotes for the confirmed repair and a full replacement.

Use the repair percentage as a discussion starter

A repair approaching half the installed cost of a replacement deserves a careful comparison. We use that kind of comparison to open the discussion, not to promise that a fixed percentage gives the right answer for every home.

Put the repair scope beside a complete replacement scope. Ask what each option includes and what remains outside the estimate. A bare equipment price is not the same as an installed replacement.

        Include support in the decision

Ask about the warranty that applies to your exact heater and proposed work, who handles a claim, and how replacement parts would be obtained. Get those answers in the current written estimate.

A brand recommendation or price mentioned in an older recording is background context. Your decision should use today’s equipment options, installation scope, and written terms.

Hey guys, Colby Yarbro with Yarbro & Sons. We've been serving customers since 1988. And today, we're going to throw down the gauntlet of our three best tankless water heaters. I like the Vesta the best. They have fewer problems. I've been putting them in for a long time now. They work great. If we do have a problem, their tech support is a lot better. And most of the time, they'll just send us a new unit and get you get it replaced and keep going. And that's only been a couple out of the ones I've installed. The The next one is Navien. Navien is very similar to the Vesta. They have a lot of similarities. The only difference between the two is the customer service. I don't like the way the Navien you have to go through their call center and it takes a long time to get somebody on the phone. The third one is the Rinnai. They make a great product. They're really good. I don't like them as well because it's harder to get parts for them in our area. That's mainly the main main reason I don't like to use them. Pretty much take his word on anything he says. And so, I really trust the the brands that he's talked about. And and and I trust the team that we have to put them in. And so, if you're within the Oklahoma City metro area and you're in need of any kind of plumbing services, where you know, if we need to install some equipment for you to help with your water at your house, then please click the link below and we'd love to be your team. All right, friends, grab a cup of coffee and let's talk about your water heater. In this instance, there's a small puddle under your water heater and it keeps coming back. That does not automatically mean that you need a new tank. Sometimes it's the little drain valve at the bottom. Sometimes it's the gas control on the side. So here at Yarbrough and Sons, we look at where it's coming from before we talk about a full tank replacement. So in the spirit of full transparency, those repair paths on our sheet run about $425 to $700, depending on the part. A full tank swap is a completely different conversation with its own range. I'm Willie Yarbrough with Yarbrough and Sons, and do you have a puddle under your water heater?

So, your water heater has failed and you need to know if you should replace it or repair it. And I'm here to tell you, use the 50% rule. If the cost to repair your water heater is greater than 50% of the cost of a new one, you should probably consider replacing that water heater. If it's less and it's less than about 8 years old, you should consider repairing it. So, use the 50% rule plus the age of the equipment. That's kind of where I look at that. But, hope this helps making your water heater decision. [singing]

Why water heaters don't last as long as they used to | OKC water heater repair

Why don't water heaters last as long as they used to? That's a really valid question and a lot of it has to do with different manufacturing standards and the water chemical makeup in your area. Today, water heaters are made with more costefficient materials and they're designed to improve efficiency, which means thinner materials. And when you have thinner materials, you have breakdowns happen faster. Now, does that mean they're not safe? Absolutely not. Water heaters are completely safe. And I know you're probably conjuring images of water heaters exploding that you've seen on YouTube. That's not the case. A lot of issues that people have with water heaters and failures can be either a prevented or seen well before they happen. Here at Yarbone Suns, we replace hundreds of water heaters every year and come across probably thousands. So everything that we're talking about is coming from our experience. [singing] >> [music]
