Practical answers from our team

How Do I Choose a Water Heater and Installer?

Choose a water heater by comparing the complete installation scope, your busiest hot-water demand, the fuel already serving the unit, local parts access, and the written support path for the exact model.

The short answer
  • Compare the complete installed scope, not only the equipment label.
  • Describe your busiest simultaneous hot-water use before selecting capacity.
  • Ask who will diagnose problems, obtain parts, and handle warranty claims.

Look beyond the label on the tank

The equipment choice and the installation belong in the same conversation. Ask what the job includes, which model is proposed, and how the installation will meet that model’s requirements.

Discuss service access and any work required around the existing location. A lower equipment price is hard to compare with a complete installed proposal until both scopes are clear.

Compare water-heater replacement cost by complete scope

Ask for installed proposals for the brands and models you are considering, then compare how warranty support will work. When tank options have similar prices, the speed of warranty-claim handling becomes a useful part of the comparison.

Before comparing like-for-like tank replacement options, identify whether your existing water heater uses gas or electricity. Capacity, the selected model, the work required at the existing location, and the support path for a warranty claim are all useful parts of the cost conversation.

Ask the installer to explain the support behind each proposed option before choosing. A similar upfront price does not answer who will help with a problem.

Ask what happens if it needs service

Parts availability and technical support affect the service experience. Ask who would diagnose a problem, how parts would be obtained, and which local team would handle the work.

Brand rankings describe experiences at a point in time. They are less useful than answers about the exact equipment available for your home today.

Get capacity and warranty answers in writing

Describe your busiest hot-water use so the installer can explain why the proposed capacity fits. Include overlapping showers, bathing, dishes, and laundry in that conversation.

Ask for the current warranty terms for the exact model and installation, including what is covered and who handles a claim. Do not treat an older video’s price, brand experience, or replacement story as a guarantee for a new purchase.

Bradford White, we have a lot of problems with their gas valves where they're having to be replaced in less than 5 6 years and you have a 6-year warranty and most of the time they're under that warranty. But, you know, gas valves shouldn't go out that fast. So, this is a better quality to us. Personal opinion, we don't have near the problems that we do with the Bradford whites. So, we install AO Smith as much as possible. [Music]

There's a difference here between the box store water heaters that are State or AO Smith and the supply house water heaters. The difference is quite literally in not only just what they put into it, but the weight. There is on average an 11-lb difference on a 40-gallon tank on a supply house edition versus a box store edition. So, if you walk up to the orange box store and you buy a State or an AO Smith water heater, it is not going to be the same as what we get from our supply houses. And why is that? Because they're they're trying to be at a specific price point for a specific set of consumers. But, at the Supply House, we're able to buy these water heaters for the same price as what you could at a big box store, but now there's an 11-lb difference. And where does that 11-lb difference come in? One, it comes in in the steel that they are using in the tank itself. Two, it comes in on the lining that they're putting inside of the tank to make sure that it is better insulated. Three, talking about insulation, there's more insulation in the tank itself. And also, four and finally, they're not using plastic fittings or plastic T&P valves or any plastic in the plumbing itself. Therefore, it's all brass and it's not going to crack, break, or just weather as plastic does. So, that is the difference between the supply house edition and a box store edition of these two tanks. Whenever we look at how many gallons per minute that we can produce with an electric tankless water heater, sure, it can service a house. Sure, it can make you comfortable and it can be an efficient appliance under the right circumstances. But the problem is if it's more than just you or just you and your wife or your husband, whoever, well, then comes the problem of it's not going to be enough to service the home's demands and the home's needs all at one time. And frankly, if I can't believe in something to take care of you when you need it most, I'm not going to install it. We're not going to install it because you're not going to call the manufacturer of the water heater whenever it doesn't work the way you want it to. You're going to call us. You're going to call Yarbrough & Sons. You're going to be asking me, "Tucker, why did you sell me this thing whenever it doesn't even allow me to take a shower at full pressure and run my dishwasher at the same time?" Because guess what? Life doesn't stop for anybody. You get home from work, you want to take a hot shower, and you need to run the dishes and or the washer at the same time. And you shouldn't be inhibited to do that by your water heater.

Hey guys, Colby Yarbro with Yarbro & Sons. We've been serving customers since 1988. And today, we're going to throw down the gauntlet of our three best tankless water heaters. I like the Vesta the best. They have fewer problems. I've been putting them in for a long time now. They work great. If we do have a problem, their tech support is a lot better. And most of the time, they'll just send us a new unit and get you get it replaced and keep going. And that's only been a couple out of the ones I've installed. The The next one is Navien. Navien is very similar to the Vesta. They have a lot of similarities. The only difference between the two is the customer service. I don't like the way the Navien you have to go through their call center and it takes a long time to get somebody on the phone. The third one is the Rinnai. They make a great product. They're really good. I don't like them as well because it's harder to get parts for them in our area. That's mainly the main main reason I don't like to use them. Pretty much take his word on anything he says. And so, I really trust the the brands that he's talked about. And and and I trust the team that we have to put them in. All right, so you're sitting there replacing your water heater, and somebody just asked whether you want gas or electric. Like it's a blank slate and you get to choose. Okay, so most of the time your house has already decided for you. So go ahead, go out there, look what kind of fuel you've got. On our sheet, a 40-gallon electric is somewhere around 2308 and a 40-gallon gas is around 2041. If you step up to a 50 gallon, you're looking at about 2349 for electric and 2829 for gas. So pick the pair that matches your house, not the brochure, okay? I'm Willie Yarbrough with Yarbrough & Sons, and, uh, what fuel is on the tank you have right now?

The orange / blue box store special. So, Whirlpool, A. O. Smith, State. Now, you're like, "What the heck, Tucker? A. O. Smith and State are in your S tier, as well." It is the difference between a supply house edition and the big box store edition. And Whirlpool is just catching a stray because I don't believe in their tanks at all. Here's what we know. The water heaters that are supplied to the big box stores are set at a very specific price point. They are trying to compete race to the bottom wise, and obviously everyone's trying to be as competitive as possible. But, whenever you actually take an A. O. Smith 40-gallon natural gas water heater from a supply house, and then go get an identical one from a box store, there is an 11-lb on average difference, which means one of two things is happening. Either, because of the orange and blue box store sticker, somehow that tank got 11 lbs lighter, meaning it's easier for you to install, or it means that the equipment is worse. Uh they use cheaper materials, and uh they're really trying to make sure that they can continue to make their margin while still charging as little as possible / as most as possible uh without uh having to compromise on it actually being called a water heater. Uh do not install a Whirlpool. Do not buy a water heater from an orange or blue box store, because if you do, uh the warranty support processing, you're going to have to go through them for all of that, and I don't have to tell you a whole lot. The Bradford White water heater. And why is it in the A tier not the S tier? Well, it is in the A tier because they are have a few issues on some gas valves. They also have some plastic fittings. Other than that, Bradford White is a great tank. It is a supply house only. They don't sell to the big box stores, which means that us plumbers, we love it. Because when we're competing with Home Depot and Lowe's, creates problems because there's a certain price point expectation that comes into play. And if you're getting a professional service done, you shouldn't just be paying what Home Depot or Lowe's are telling you that you should pay. Now, if you're DIYing it, great. Have at it. More power to you. And matter of fact, you can get a lot done there. But, Bradford White is a US-made product. It's manufactured right here in the great United States, which is why it is an A tier product for me. But, where I take a few points away is because of some of the quality of materials that they put into their product. They have a great support structure. There is no 1-800 number. It's the same warranty as a State and A. O. Smith. But, from putting in over 5,000 water heaters that we have, we have just run into a couple more issues with Bradford White due to some of the plastic pieces that are involved in it than on A. O. and Rheem Ruud have arguably one of the dumbest, most asinine things in the industry, which is a pro-rated warranty. What's a pro-rated warranty? Well, a pro-rated warranty means that like if this warranty is 6, 8, or 10 years. There's different categories and really and truly it's the same tank. We're just paying a different price for the different warranties that we're buying. But it's pro-rated. So if this tank fails in year seven of an eight-year warranty, you're only going to get like 75 bucks. Like there's not there's no way around it. Like that's that's how the warranty works for them. It's pro-rated out. So like if the tank failed, if we had a bladder pop, if we had a gas valve fail, if the anode rod just got completely sideways and we're not able to flush the tank and we have so much sediment in there that the tank is no longer properly functioning, there's nothing we can really do from a warranty standpoint to say hey this thing failed before it should have. It's odd to me though because they don't do this on their HVAC side. So I'm really curious. Rheem Ruud, answer in the comments. I'm calling you to task here because the pro-rated water heater warranty is archaic and it's bad for consumers. Do better. You have too good of a brand on the HVAC side of things to be in a C-tier category on the water heater side of things. Your home. >> [singing] [music]

Why don't water heaters last as long as they used to? That's a really valid question and a lot of it has to do with different manufacturing standards and the water chemical makeup in your area. Today, water heaters are made with more costefficient materials and they're designed to improve efficiency, which means thinner materials. And when you have thinner materials, you have breakdowns happen faster. Now, does that mean they're not safe? Absolutely not. Water heaters are completely safe. And I know you're probably conjuring images of water heaters exploding that you've seen on YouTube. That's not the case. A lot of issues that people have with water heaters and failures can be either a prevented or seen well before they happen. Here at Yarbone Suns, we replace hundreds of water heaters every year and come across probably thousands. So everything that we're talking about is coming from our experience. [singing] >> [music]

This is as close to a set-it-and-forget-it tank as you can get. Whenever we install these tanks, it's common for us to see these last between 12 and 15 years. Now, we still want to do flushing. We still want to make sure that we're doing proper maintenance, but we have far less callbacks on gas valves, far fewer instances where the the dip tube anode rod has gone awry, and we are able to rely on these things very well. Also, the warranty is great. There's no 1-800 number that we're going to have to call from the, you know, installer side of things and try to get warranty support and warranty registration for you as the homeowner. Guess what? If it's under warranty, we're going to get to rip the whole thing or rip the piece out and put a new one in, no questions asked. So, that is the S tier for our water heater list.
