How to Flush a Tankless Water Heater: 6 Easy Steps to Save Thousands

How to Flush a Tankless Water Heater

If you own a tankless water heater and haven’t flushed it yet, you are sitting on a ticking financial time bomb. Scale buildup—the accumulation of calcium and minerals—is the number one killer of tankless units. Without regular descaling, your unit will lose efficiency, struggle to heat water, and eventually fail prematurely.

I sat down with our Master Plumber, James, to break down the exact process. By following these six steps once a year, you can protect your investment and ensure your showers stay hot for a decade or more.

Why Flushing Matters

When calcium builds up inside the heat exchanger, it acts as an insulator. This means your unit has to use significantly more gas to heat the water through that layer of “rock.” Eventually, the buildup becomes so thick the unit can no longer function.

The Tools You’ll Need:

  • A 5-gallon bucket.
  • A submersible pump (designed for HVAC/Plumbing descaling).
  • Two reinforced hoses.
  • 4 gallons of distilled white vinegar (James prefers this over harsh chemicals as it’s safer and effective).

The 6-Step Flush Guide

1. Disconnect the Power

Safety first. Unplug the unit or turn off the power at the breaker. James prefers unplugging it entirely to ensure there is zero chance of the unit firing up while it’s dry.

2. Isolate the Unit

You must have an isolation kit (service valves) installed to do this. Close both the blue (cold inlet) and red (hot outlet) main valves to the house. This ensures no vinegar enters your home’s plumbing and no city water enters the unit during the flush.

3. Connect the Hoses and Pump

Connect one hose from the pump to the cold water service port. Connect the second hose to the hot water service port and lead it back into your bucket. Open the small service port valves.

4. Circulate the Vinegar

Fill your bucket with distilled white vinegar. Plug in the pump and let it circulate the solution through the water heater.

  • Pro Tip: James recommends circulating for 45 minutes when using vinegar to ensure all scale is thoroughly dissolved.

5. Fresh Water Flush

Once the 45 minutes are up, turn off the pump. Disconnect the hose from the cold inlet. To get the vinegar smell and residue out, open the main cold water valve slightly to let fresh water run through the unit and out the hot service hose into a drain for 5–10 minutes.

6. Clean the Strainer and Restart

Before finishing, locate the filter/strainer screen (usually a small black plug on the unit). Remove it, rinse off any trapped debris, and put it back. Disconnect all hoses, close the service ports, open the main hot/cold valves, and plug the unit back in.

How Often Should You Flush?

  • Standard Water: Once a year.
  • Hard Water (Well Water or Central Oklahoma): Twice a year.

Proactive Protection: Softeners and Filters

If you find yourself flushing out a lot of “crystals,” James highly recommends a salt-based water softener. This softens the water rather than just “conditioning” it, which prevents scale from forming in the first place. Pairing this with a dual-stage sediment and carbon filter will also remove chemical tastes and protect your home’s fixtures.

Conclusion: Maintenance is Cheaper than Replacement

A tankless water heater is a high-performance machine. You wouldn’t drive a Ferrari for 50,000 miles without an oil change—don’t treat your water heater any differently.

If you aren’t comfortable doing this yourself, or if you don’t have an isolation kit installed yet, we can help. If you are in the Oklahoma City metro area, our team of licensed plumbers can perform a professional flush and safety inspection for you.
