Ranking the Best and Worst Water Heater Brands: The Definitive Guide

Ranking the Best and Worst Water Heater Brands

At Yarbrough & Sons, we have been in business for 38 years (going on 39). While we are an HVAC and Plumbing shop, our team has installed over 5,000 water heaters in the last five years alone. We’ve seen it all—hard water, high pressure, and every brand failure imaginable.

If you are wondering if the brand on the tank actually matters, the answer is a resounding yes. Here is our definitive guide to the best and worst water heater brands on the market today.

S-Tier: The Elite (Supply House Editions)

  • State / AO Smith (Professional Grade): These two brands are manufactured by the same company (AO Smith). They are the closest thing to a “set it and forget it” tank.
  • The Critical Caveat: We only recommend the Supply House Edition.
  • Why they are S-Tier: There is a literal 11 lb difference between a 40-gallon tank from a professional supply house and the one you find at a big-box retail store. That 11 lbs represents thicker steel, better internal lining, and superior insulation. Most importantly, pro-grade models use brass fittings and T&P valves, whereas retail models use plastic that cracks and weathers over time. Furthermore, their warranty support is handled directly through the supplier—no 1-800 numbers or red tape.

A-Tier: American Made Quality

  • Bradford White: This is a “wholesale only” brand, meaning you won’t find it at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
  • The Pros: These tanks are made in the USA. They have a fantastic support structure and are built for professional installation.
  • The Cons: While they are top-tier, they lose the S-Tier spot because we’ve seen slightly more issues with their gas valves and plastic components compared to the pro-grade State/AO Smith units. However, if you want a reliable, American-made tank, this is a stellar choice.

B-Tier: The Household Giants

  • GE / American Standard: These brands are ubiquitous with home appliances, from toilets to dishwashers.
  • The Problem: While the tanks themselves are decent, the support structure is lacking. If a component fails, you (and your contractor) are often stuck calling a 1-800 number that is frequently outsourced. This leads to long wait times and “hoop-jumping” to get a simple warranty claim processed. We’ve also seen their gas valves and anode rods fail sooner than the brands higher on this list.

C-Tier: The “Line of Demarcation”

  • Rheem / Ruud: Rheem makes great HVAC equipment, but their water heaters fall into the C-Tier for one specific, frustrating reason: Prorated Warranties.
  • Why to Avoid Them: Most brands offer a full replacement if a tank fails under warranty. Rheem, however, often uses a prorated system. If your 8-year tank fails in year 7, they might only give you a $75 credit toward a new one. This is an archaic practice that is bad for consumers. We rarely recommend these because their warranty support is notoriously difficult to navigate.

D-Tier: The Big Box Specials (Avoid!)

  • Whirlpool & Retail Store Specials (Retail AO Smith/State): * The Verdict: Never buy a water heater from an “orange or blue” big-box store. To hit those low retail price points, manufacturers use thinner materials and plastic drain valves that are prone to leaking.
  • The Headache: If a retail tank leaks under warranty, you are on your own. You’ll have to drain it, disconnect it, haul it back to the store, and hope they have a replacement in stock. A professional-grade tank from a plumber avoids this entire nightmare.

Conclusion: Your Installation is 80% of the Lifespan

You can buy the best S-Tier tank in the world, but if it’s installed poorly, it won’t last. A professional ensures that gas pressures are set, safety mechanisms are in place, and the tank is optimized for your local water conditions.
