What to Do When Your AC Won’t Turn On in Oklahoma City

If you’re in the Oklahoma City metro, you don’t need us to tell you it’s hot. We hit 94° on March 20th — a full-on summer heat wave before summer officially started — and our phones went from maintenance calls to no-cool calls almost overnight.

We were actually called in for a live news segment with KOCO to talk about what homeowners should do when their AC won’t turn on. Here’s everything we shared, plus a few things we didn’t have time to cover on air.

Why Is This Happening in March?

This is one of the earliest starts to what we call our “no-cool season” that we can remember. Normally, spring is maintenance season — cleaning off units, checking refrigerant levels, making sure everything is ready for the heat ahead.

Instead, we got punched in the mouth with 90-plus degree days before most homeowners had even thought about turning their AC on. That’s a problem, because air conditioners that sat all winter sometimes need a little help getting back up and running.

Check These Things Before You Call

Before you pick up the phone, run through this quick checklist. You might be able to fix it yourself in five minutes.

  • Change your air filter. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons an AC won’t cool properly. If you haven’t changed it recently, do it now.
  • Clear debris from your outdoor condenser unit. Walk outside and take a look. If leaves, dirt, or other junk are packed around the unit, clear it out. It needs airflow to run efficiently.
  • Check your thermostat settings. Make sure it’s set to “cool,” not just “fan.” It sounds obvious, but it happens more than you’d think.

If you run through all of that and it still won’t cool, it’s time to call a local HVAC company. More often than not on a first-time startup, the issue is something straightforward — a dead capacitor, a thermostat problem, or an airflow restriction. These are quick fixes when you catch them early.

Stop Treating Your Thermostat Like a Gas Pedal

This is probably the biggest tip we hammer on every summer, and it’s worth repeating.

Setting your thermostat to 62° does not make your home cool down faster. Your AC doesn’t have a “turbo mode.” It runs at the same speed regardless of what temperature you set it to. All you’re doing by cranking it down is making it run longer than it needs to.

On a system that’s 10 to 12 years old, that extra runtime is exactly where breakdowns happen. Set it where you want it and leave it alone.

Don’t Wait for the Hottest Day to Find Out Something’s Wrong

The forecast isn’t letting up. Once we consistently hit 85 to 90° on the daily, run times go up — and so do breakdowns. A system that barely made it through last summer might not make it through this one without a tune-up.

Right now, in April and May, we have availability. Once June hits, our phones don’t stop. If your system is older or you haven’t had it serviced, now is the window to get ahead of it.
